چکیده

This paper presents the modeling, design, fabrication and measurement of MEMS-enabled continuously tunable evanescent-mode electromagnetic cavity resonators and filters with very high unloaded quality factors (Qu). Integrated electrostatically-actuated thin diaphragms are used for the first time for tuning the frequency of the resonators/filters. An example tunable resonator with 2.6:1 (5.0 − 1.9 GHz) tuning ratio, Qu of 300 − 650 is presented. A continuously tunable 2pole filter from 3.04 GHz to 4.71 GHz with 0.7% bandwidth and insertion loss of 3.55 − 2.38 dB is also shown as a technology demonstrator. Mechanical stability measurements show that the tunable resonators/filters exhibit very low frequency drift (less than 0.5% for 3 hours) under constant bias voltage. This paper significantly expands upon previously reported tunable resonators [1].

Electrostatic fringing-field actuation for pull-in free RF-MEMS analogue tunable resonators

This paper presents the design, fabrication and measurement of the first pull-in free tunable evanescent-mode microwave resonator based on arrays of electrostatically actuated fringing-field RF-MEMS tuners. Electrostatic fringing-field actuation (EFFA) is the key on achieving a wide tunable frequency range that is not limited by the conventional pull-in instability. Furthermore, total lack of d...

X-band RF MEMS tuned combline filter - Electronics Letters

Introduction: Microwave filters are critical components for electronic warfare, radar, and communications systems, but typical tunable filters are bulky, expensive, and consume large amounts of power. Radio frequency microelectromechanical systems (RF MEMS) technology provides the possibility of low-loss, high linearity filtering in volumes comparable to those of integrated circuits [1]. The ma...

A Tunable Miniaturized RF MEMS Resonator With Simultaneous High Q (500-735) and Fast Response Speed (< 10-60 mu s)

This paper reports on the design, fabrication, and measurement of a novel radio frequency (RF) microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) tunable all-silicon evanescent-mode cavity-based resonator that simultaneously achieves high quality factor and fast response speed. The resonator is based on a 1.5-mm-deep silicon-etched cavity attached to a gold-coated silicon substrate with an array of 75 185-μ...

High frequency tuning mechanism using nanoplasma

The ever growing demand for reconfi gurable electronic devices at mobile form factors makes RF tunable devices and circuits increasingly important. Conventional tuning mechanisms typically rely on controlling material properties or dimensions. These are often achieved by using electrical, mechanical, or thermal approach. On the other hand, the tuning principle of this study is based on changing...
